Our third day was packed with wicked lighthouse action. We left Massachusetts and headed north to see one of only two lighthouses along New Hampshire’s 18 miles of coast: Portsmouth Harbor Light (established in 1771 with the existing tower built in 1878).
This lighthouse is adjacent to Fort William and Mary, and a great place for Grandma to show some attitude.
Here’s Blake with a bell manufactured by the Blake Bell Co.
We had lunch at Great Island Common Park which offered great views of two lighthouses. Here’s Whaleback Light… though technically in Maine, it’s actually south of Portsmouth Harbor Light.
Our second lighthouse of the day was Nubble Light (aka Cape Neddick Light). This lighthouse was on a small rocky island just off shore.
Here Grandma display more of her posing prowess.
Our final stop for the day was Maine’s first lighthouse: Portland Head Light. The weather started moving in, so the conditions weren’t has nice as they were at our other stops, but we could clearly see this and two other lighthouses from the cape: Ram Island Ledge Light and Spring Point Ledge Light.
Blake’s first camping trip. He slept well at the head of the bed.
Our party barge.
First lighthouse of the day: Five Mile Point Light in New Haven, CT.
Lighthouse #2 for the day was Beavertail Light in Jamestown, RI.
It was blustery, but was a beautiful setting.
Castle Hill Light (Newport, CT) was tricky to find, and unfortunately the path too rugged for grandma to traverse… so we took some video and showed it to her on the TV in the motor home… so she “felt” like she was there.
We ended the day by having dinner infront of Scituate Lighthouse in Scituate, MA. Grandma thoroughly enjoyed being waited on at a fancy roving restaurant with a view.
Our first lighthouse on our New England Adventure was Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Completed in 1764, it now stands as the oldest working lighthouse in the US.
Caleb and I climbed the 94 stairs to the top.
Grandma telling stories about Germany.
Grandma, Kate and Blake. Grandma’s (and Blake’s) very first lighthouse.
Group shot with our trusty RV. Our home for the next 5 days.
Finally picked up the Vollbracht cousins in La Guardia. Here’s a tip: never drive an RV through NYC… it’s not fun.
