Lightning strike

lightning.jpg

When we got home from our long road trip out to PA last week, we noticed that something was amiss when the garage door only opened about 6 inches with each click of the remote. Our next clue came as we sat down to dinner and went to turn on the tv, only to get a blank screen. I called the neighbor and he quickly confirmed my fears… our house likely got struck by lightning during one of the storms that rolled through KC while we were gone.
As the week progressed, we discovered other electronic victims of the bolt. Here’s what’s got toasted:
1.) Garage Door Opener
2.) Cable modem
3.) Wireless router
4.) NIC (network interface card) on my office computer
5.) Video Card on our media center computer
6.) Sprinkler System (I think it’s the controller)
7.) TV in our bedroom (won’t even turn on)

I’ve been repairing/replacing theses things one at a time, which is a challenge… but at least now I know a whole lot more about how garage door openers work.

Is it vacation if you have to work?

Kate and I went to California this week for a few days… mostly involving myself stuck in meetings at the office while Kate hit the beach. Short and sweet.
